With the news of ShanQuan Hemphill signing with Green Bay on Monday, it was obvious there was still some more roster news to come since his signing put the Phoenix over the scholarship limit.
That news came later Monday afternoon when the Green Bay Press-Gazette confirmed that Sukhjot Bains would not be returning to the program next season.
“Sukhjot has decided to return home and finish his education,” head coach Linc Darner told the paper. “We wish him nothing but the best, we support his decision and thank him for his time and dedication to the program.”
The 6’6” forward from Delta, British Columbia committed to Green Bay last April after playing the previous season at Northwest College in Wyoming and appeared in 33 games for the Phoenix this season averaging 3.0 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 1.2 assists in 15.7 minutes per game.

He was a solid contributor on the defensive end but didn’t seem to mesh well with the up-tempo style the Phoenix try to play. He scored in double figures just twice this season and was the team’s 10th leading scorer out of 11 scholarship players.
Bains was key in helping Green Bay erase an 18-point deficit during a 59-57 victory against Eastern Illinois at the Resch Center on December 6th. In 24 minutes he contributed 10 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 steals including a pivotal three pointer to tie the game at 57 as well as a driving layup with 17.5 seconds left for the winning basket.
A few weeks later, he had a career high 16 points on 6-8 shooting in a victory over Detroit Mercy on December 28th.
He only scored more than 5 points in a game on two occasions after that, however, scoring 6 in 22 minutes in a loss at Youngstown State on January 6th and 7 in a win at Detroit Mercy on February 24th.
Bains departure means Sandy Cohen will be the team’s only senior next season. The addition of Hemphill means the Green Bay roster will now have seven juniors on scholarship as well as five sophomores and zero freshmen.
