The college basketball season is still several months away but it’s never too early to start thinking about next season.
Green Bay is usually one of the last team’s in the country to release its entire schedule but there have been some releases from the program as well as schedule announcements from Phoenix opponents that can help us piece together the puzzle.
The Phoenix will participate in four games as part of the 2018 2K Classic this fall, playing one game at Iowa and another game at Oregon. The remaining two games will be played at Eastern Washington University against two of the following three teams: Eastern Washington, UMKC, or Morehead State.
The Green Bay Press-Gazette reported earlier this spring that the Phoenix will not face the Wisconsin Badgers for the first time since 1998 but will travel to East Lansing, Michigan to take on the Michigan State Spartans. The two programs have not played each other since December 29, 2007.
Green Bay athletic director Charles Guthrie recently tweeted a picture of a poster featuring “key home games” for the men’s and women’s programs. The Phoenix will host Indiana State and Northern Illinois in return games of home-and-homes that started a season ago. Green Bay will also host Belmont again in what is possibly a makeup game for the December 17, 2016 game that was cancelled due to a snowstorm. The Phoenix and Bruins also played at Belmont last season.
The Phoenix will also play at Missouri Valley Conference member Evansville on December 22nd, according to their program’s released schedule.
The three known home games are already a step up from last season’s subpar home schedule in which the marquee non-conference games were against Bowling Green and Eastern Illinois. Low majors (Florida A&M and Stetson) as well as three games against non-Division I schools rounded out the home non-conference slate and likely contributed to Green Bay’s lowest fan attendance in 33 years.
Green Bay’s known non-conference opponents
- November 11 – at Iowa (2K Classic)
- November 16 – at Eastern Washington (2K Classic)
- November 17 – vs Morehead State / UMKC (2K Classic) (at Eastern Washington)
- November 20 – at Oregon (2K Classic)
- December 22 – at Evansville
- Indiana State
- Belmont
- Northern Illinois
- at Michigan State
There are still four more non-conference opponents to be announced.
The Horizon League schedule will also be announced later this summer.
