Jiovanni Miles suspended indefinitely

Anyone looking for answers as to the whereabouts of sophomore guard Jiovanni Miles so far this season finally have their answer.

Miles did not travel to either of Green Bay’s first two road games of the season at Minnesota and Wisconsin and wasn’t on the bench for the Phoenix 93-91 double overtime loss to Eastern Illinois at the Kress Center last Saturday. He also did not travel to Milwaukee for the Phoenix loss to Marquette on Tuesday.

Following the EIU game, head coach Will Ryan confirmed that Miles is not with the team currently and is “suspended indefinitely.” He also added that it is “too early to tell” if Miles will return to the team at all this season.

Miles joined the program as a walk-on prior to last season and had planned on redshirting before being called into action twelve games into the season due to injury issues. He scored 11 points in a 126-64 throttling of Division III school Concordia-Chicago in a game where only eight Phoenix players were available to play.

Along with PJ Pipes and Amari Davis, he is one of just three current Green Bay players that played minutes for the Phoenix last year finishing the season playing a total of 45 minutes over a span of 7 games scoring 17 points.

Despite joining the program as a walk-on, the Green Bay Press Gazette reported in July that Miles is on scholarship this season. The newspaper reported that he was put on scholarship prior to Ryan officially taking over the Phoenix head coaching job in June.

Regardless of the circumstances surrounding the suspension, athletic scholarships are not four year deals and instead are year-to-year meaning if Miles does return to the program he may have to revert back to walk-on status for next season as was the case when he joined the program under head coach Linc Darner in 2019.

Green Bay unofficially has 13 scholarships committed for the 2021 season.
