Jacob Jones is Green Bay’s first 2020 commitment

We’re still a few months away from the 2019/2020 college basketball season but Green Bay’s 2020/2021 roster is beginning to take shape.

The Phoenix received the first commitment to its 2020 recruiting class over the weekend when Jacob Jones announced his verbal commitment to Green Bay.

The 5’10” point guard announced his decision on Twitter on Saturday afternoon.

The Jeffersonville, Indiana native averaged 11.4 points, 7.4 assists, and 1.9 steals per game last season at Jeffersonville High School and was named first team All-Conference and honorable mention All-State after a solid junior season.

“Jones is a quick guard that creates plays for himself and teammates alike,” writes Trevor Andershock of Indiana Basketball Source. “He’s a bit undersized, but his quickness helps offset that.”

“The big key for his college production will be his shooting. Outside shooting has been a weakness of his game in high school.”

However, he did display the ability to knock down the outside shot last season shooting 42.9% (18/42) from behind the arc.

“He hit shots and looked good doing it in June,” Andershock added. “If that continues, Jones will succeed at Green Bay.”

At 5’10”, Jones was lightly recruited up to this summer with his only other known scholarship offer coming from IU-Southeast, an NAIA school in nearby New Albany, Indiana. The head coach at IU-Southeast, Wiley Brown, also coached Jones during AAU play.

“He had a lot of coaches out to see him,” Brown told the News and Tribune. “Unfortunately, the coaches look at his stature. They don’t see the inside of his heart. The kid works extremely hard on and off the floor.”

“He’s extremely intelligent as a basketball player and education wise.”

Jones is the first player to commit to Green Bay’s 2020 recruiting class. Green Bay will have at least four more open scholarships to replace outgoing seniors Kam Hankerson, JayQuan McCloud, Tank Hemphill, Josh McNair, and Cody Schwartz, though it is possible one of those scholarships will go to newly signed walk-on Jiovanni Miles next season.

Jones will be able to make his commitment official when the early signing period begins on November 13th.
