With the Green Bay Phoenix season now officially over that means the off-season is here and already there is roster turnover happening across college basketball, including in Green Bay.
Junior guard Hunter Crist has entered the transfer portal according to Travis Branham of 247Sports.com. The 6’3” Cicero, Indiana native averaged 2.0 points, 1.5 assists, and 1.3 rebounds in 10.8 minutes per game this season appearing in 31 of Green Bay’s 33 games, including 1 start.
Similar to Jevon Smith and TJ Parham last year, he will graduate from UW-Green Bay this spring and then transfer becoming immediately eligible to play elsewhere for his final season.
Crist’s best season in Green Bay came during the 2017/2018 campaign when he scored 3.9 points per game while shooting 38.8% from behind the arc in 14.8 minutes per game as a freshman. But his playing time dwindled to 7.4 minutes last year as a sophomore and his production suffered as a result.
With a guard heavy lineup this season it was difficult for Crist to find the floor and when he did he was unable to get into flow of the game many times. He made just 22.2% (4-18) of his shots from distance this season.
But he does have versatility as a player that can play off the ball as a shooting guard as well as play the point guard as the primary ball handler. He dished out 47 assists this season compared to just 17 turnovers.
His departure frees up a scholarship for Green Bay to use on a class of 2020 prospect or to possibly bring in a Division I transfer from another school. The Phoenix will be losing Kameron Hankerson, JayQuan McCloud, Cody Schwartz, and Josh McNair to graduation but are bringing in Jeffersonville High School (IN) point guard Jacob Jones and JUCO transfers Paris Taylor (6’6” F), Blayton Williams (6’3” G), and Leon Ayers (6’6” G).
Green Bay will also gain 6’2” guard Josh Jefferson for next season after sitting out this past season due to NCAA transfer rules after joining the Phoenix from Illinois State.
